For many users, the process still depends on centralized custodians, manual checks, long waiting periods, and the need to expose sensitive personal or banking information. But what if a fiat-to-crypto transaction could feel more like using a vending machine: intent in, cryptographic proof verified, assets released? The Horizen x Thrive Builder Funding Program continues to highlight projects building on Horizen's privacy-first infrastructure. In this Project Showcase, we're featuring Lighter.IM, a ZK-enabled decentralized on/off-ramp protocol designed to make fiat-to-crypto movement more secure, private, automated, and non-custodial. To better understand their vision and what they are building, we sat down with the Lighter.IM team. 1) In simple terms, what is Lighter.IM, why does it exist, and what problem are you solving for users? Lighter.IM is a decentralized fiat-to-crypto bridge built to make on-ramping and off-ramping more secure, convenient, and efficient. For users unfamiliar with crypto infrastructure, Lighter.IM acts as a faithful and honest executor of their transaction intent. The goal is to remove much of the friction that currently exists when moving between fiat and digital assets. The protocol focuses on three core pillars: First, security. Lighter.IM is designed to prevent leakage of sensitive personal information or documentation, while keeping the protocol fully non-custodial. Users maintain control of their assets rather than surrendering custody to a centralized intermediary. Second, convenience. Lighter.IM aims to reduce complex certification steps, waiting periods, and manual verification processes, provided both counterparties agree to the transaction terms. Third, efficiency. Once a buyer submits a zkTLS proof generated from their payment voucher, and that proof is verified, the transaction can be completed almost instantly. 2) Lighter.IM is described as a ZK-enabled decentralized on/off-ramp. In practical terms, what does zero-knowledge technology change for users compared to traditional fiat-to-crypto services? Zero-knowledge technology changes the relationship between privacy and trust. In traditional fiat-to-crypto services, users often need to reveal sensitive information to prove that a payment was made. Lighter.IM changes that model by allowing users to prove payment activity without exposing the underlying personal or banking data to the counterparty. Lighter.IM uses technologies such as Permit2 for secure asset locking, zkTLS for payment data verification, and tlsnotary (https://tlsnotary.org) for automated proof validation. In practice, the buyer completes a fiat payment, generates a ZK proof through a browser extension, and submits that proof for verification. Once the proof is verified, the smart contract can release the assets automatically. The result is a more automated settlement process where the protocol acts as a cryptographic arbiter, reducing the need for manual trust between counterparties. 3) What message would you like to share directly with the Horizen community, including builders and ecosystem supporters following Thrive-funded projects? Blockchain and smart contracts have evolved significantly, but the industry is still far from true mass adoption. Lighter.IM believes the next major step is the seamless integration of traditional business logic with smart contracts. Horizen's infrastructure, particularly its trusted computing and ZK-focused environment, creates a strong foundation for that convergence. By leveraging TLSNotary to handle complex verification tasks, Lighter.IM is building infrastructure that can help turn decentralized finance into something more practical for everyday use. For the Horizen community, the message is simple: this is a pivotal phase. Privacy-preserving verification, decentralized settlement, and real-world payment logic are beginning to come together, and Lighter.IM is excited to help build that future inside the Horizen ecosystem. 4) Many fiat on/off ramps today rely heavily on centralized custodians and opaque processes. How does Lighter.IM's decentralized architecture differ, and why is that distinction important? Lighter.IM replaces centralized gatekeepers with a transparent, decentralized architecture built around sovereign identity, non-custodial asset control, and privacy-preserving verification. Instead of requiring users to trust a custodian with both their funds and sensitive data, Lighter.IM keeps assets under user control and uses cryptographic proofs to validate payment activity. The protocol also introduces Lighter Tickets, based on ERC-6551 Token Bound Accounts, to track user reputation and credit history on-chain. This allows trust to become earned and verifiable without depending on a centralized authority. By integrating with TLSNotary, Lighter.IM can aggregate and validate proofs efficiently, reducing cost and complexity while preserving privacy. The broader vision is to make fiat-to-crypto exchange feel as simple and intuitive as buying a soda from a vending machine. 5) On-ramps are often cited as one of the biggest friction points for crypto adoption. What has been the hardest technical or UX challenge in building a decentralized ramp, and how did you approach solving it? The hardest challenge is creating a trustless bridge between fiat and crypto without relying on official cooperation from banks. Banking systems and payment gateways are fragmented, regional, and often inaccessible to decentralized protocols at the API level. Lighter.IM does not claim to solve the structural limitations of the banking system itself, but it aims to dramatically reduce user friction through programmatic automation. Rather than integrating directly with every bank API, Lighter.IM uses zkTLS to retrieve secure transaction data with the user's assistance. That data is then used to generate a zero-knowledge proof that acts as a cryptographic payment voucher. From the payment gateway's perspective, the activity looks like normal user activity. From the protocol's perspective, it becomes verifiable proof that can trigger automated settlement. The current implementation is focused on Wise.com, with broader payment coverage as a long-term goal. 6) Who is behind Lighter.IM, and how did the team's background influence the protocol's design? The Lighter.IM team is composed primarily of research and development professionals with extensive experience in the cryptocurrency sector. That background gives the team a strong understanding of transaction lifecycles, operational risks, and the balance of rights and responsibilities between participants in a decentralized protocol. The team describes itself as an organic group of friends and former colleagues, united by shared interests and a common vision rather than complex corporate structures. This developer-led culture shaped the design of Lighter.IM. The protocol is intended to be lean, transparent, and focused on solving real-world peer-to-peer trading friction through code rather than intermediaries. Beyond the support received through the Thrive program, the team states that it has no other external financial dependencies or complex financial ties. 7) Compliance, KYC/AML, and privacy often feel like opposing forces. How does Lighter.IM balance regulatory requirements with user privacy and decentralization? Lighter.IM is designed around the principle that users should be able to protect their privacy while still executing honest transaction intent. The protocol does not provide specialized tools for illicit activity. Instead, it focuses on allowing users to complete transactions without mandatory centralized custody or unnecessary exposure of personal data. The team's approach is based on three ideas: First, sovereign protection. Users' personal data should not be leaked, stored, or controlled by a central custodian. Second, user-driven compliance. If a specific counterparty requires certain compliance measures, Lighter.IM can provide technical tools to fulfill that requirement in a user-controlled way. Third, ZK-powered verification. The team plans to support features where users can prove KYC status through zkTLS by pulling certification data from external sources without revealing the underlying sensitive information to the protocol or the public. In Lighter.IM's view, decentralization, privacy, and compliance do not have to be mutually exclusive. They can coexist through user-controlled cryptographic proof. 8) Payment rails, liquidity, and regional banking integrations are complex and fragmented. How is Lighter.IM approaching these challenges while keeping the user experience simple? Lighter.IM aims to move the complexity from the user interface into the protocol itself. Instead of asking users to understand the fragmentation of global payment systems, the protocol abstracts that complexity through automation and cryptographic verification. The first strategy is using zkTLS to overcome payment rail fragmentation. Rather than integrating with thousands of regional banking APIs, Lighter.IM allows users to securely prove their own transaction data from an existing banking or payment interface. The second strategy is using TLSNotary to simplify trust. Once a payment voucher is generated, zkTLS helps automate the validation process, reducing manual escrow disputes and proof-of-payment delays. The third strategy is maintaining a unified frontend experience. Even though the backend engineering required to support different payment gateways is significant, the user should experience a simple intent-based flow. The goal is to hide the fragmentation of traditional finance behind a clean, automated transaction experience. 9) For a first-time user who has never touched crypto before, what does the end-to-end Lighter.IM experience look like? Lighter.IM is primarily designed for users who already have some familiarity with crypto and DeFi. It is a professional-grade decentralized tool rather than a simplified retail application. That said, the team is actively exploring ways to lower the barrier to entry through strategic partnerships. One possible path is ecosystem integration with partners such as hardware wallet manufacturers. Through this type of collaboration, a novice user could acquire digital assets and a secure wallet in a single flow, using fiat currency in a safer and more reliable way. In the future user journey, a buyer would initiate a purchase, complete a standard bank transfer through a supported payment rail such as Wise, and then use the Lighter.IM ZK extension to handle proof of payment in the background. The user would receive assets directly in their wallet without needing to understand the cryptography underneath. 10) Compared to centralized exchanges, custodial ramps, or aggregator services, where does Lighter.IM stand out today? Lighter.IM's strongest differentiation is that it replaces institutional trust with cryptographic certainty. Centralized exchanges and custodial ramps often require users to surrender both personal data and custody of their assets. Lighter.IM takes a different approach. On the privacy side, ZK proofs help users prove relevant facts without revealing sensitive payment or identity details. On the asset security side, the protocol is non-custodial, meaning users retain control of their assets rather than relying on a centralized holder. Lighter.IM also improves capital and operational efficiency. For sellers, Permit2 allows funds to be committed only at the actual moment of the transaction, improving capital flexibility. For buyers, TLSNotary-based payment vouchers reduce traditional waiting and manual verification friction, making settlement feel closer to an automated vending-machine experience. 11) Where does Lighter.IM stand today in terms of product readiness, and what is the next concrete milestone? Lighter.IM is currently live on the Horizen mainnet. The team notes that progress has been more deliberate than initially projected due to the complexity of payment rail integration and edge-case handling. The smart contract code is available in the project's public GitHub repository, and we welcome community review and feedback. Our primary task moving forward is to focus on driving ecosystem growth and increasing transaction volume. 12) Why did you choose to build Lighter.IM within the Horizen ecosystem and through the Thrive program? The Lighter.IM team has a long history with Horizen. The project lead has followed and supported the ecosystem since 2019, including operating Secure Nodes, Super Nodes, and EON nodes. The decision to build in the Horizen ecosystem was driven by two main factors. The first is technical synergy. Horizen's commitment to ZK privacy provides infrastructure that aligns closely with Lighter.IM's need to validate off-chain banking data at scale. The second is ecosystem support. The Thrive program provided resources and community alignment that helped the team turn research into a functional protocol. For Lighter.IM, Horizen's focus on connecting traditional finance logic with Web3 decentralization makes it a natural home for the protocol. 13) Looking 12 months ahead, what would success look like for Lighter.IM? Over the next 12 months, Lighter.IM defines success across three main areas. The first is transaction volume. The team's goal is to reach $100,000 in daily transaction volume, demonstrating stability, market fit, and reliability as an alternative to centralized ramps. The second is deeper ecosystem integration. Lighter.IM aims to collaborate with a wide range of Web3 projects and provide customized white-label integration solutions, allowing other platforms to embed decentralized ramp functionality directly into their workflows. The third is standardizing decentralized settlement. The long-term vision is for Lighter.IM to become trusted automated infrastructure for fiat-to-crypto movement. If successful, Lighter.IM could help transform fragmented payment rails into a seamless, cryptographically verified experience, giving users a more private and reliable way to move value between traditional finance and the digital economy.
