Updates on Horizen Node Challenges and Node System Changes
With the hard fork that was activated at block 1426200 (September 26th 2023), private addresses can no longer receive ZEN from transparent addresses. This affects both Secure and Super Nodes’ ability to continue to perform challenges, and the ability to set up new nodes which currently requires a balance in a shielded address.
Starting September 26, 2023, challenges in both systems are suspended indefinitely. The increased requirements of successfully validating certificates introduced with the registration of EON will serve as a substitute for challenges in the interim.
Steps for Node Operators
Existing Nodes
There should be no effect on any existing nodes unless the node’s wallet is replaced. See New Nodes below.
Any API calls from a node operator requesting a manual challenge should be stopped.
New Nodes
If a new node is created (or a new wallet is created) it will need to follow the current guide. One private address will still need to be created and a very small amount of ZEN sent to it to give the private address a balance. The ZEN will need to be sent from another private address. This is a workaround until a new version of the Nodetracker is published.
System Changes
- An updated version of the Nodetracker software that removes the check for private addresses will be available for new nodes once testing is complete.
- An updated version of the tracking server software that disables challenges (instead of just suspending) will be rolled out once testing is complete.
After the system changes have been implemented, Node Operators are free to start withdrawing funds previously required for challenges from their shielded addresses to transparent addresses.
