Horizen Community Star Interviews – MarklJenkins
We featured MarklJenkins in our Q4 Quarterly Live Stream. Markl is a newer member to the Horizen community, but that didn’t stop him from helping others or engaging the team with interesting questions.
What drew you to blockchain technology?
I have been interested in crypto and blockchain since first reading about it online several years ago. I enjoy the writing of Neal Stephenson and I followed the cypherpunk’s ideas online. I have always believed in the cause of the individual versus the faceless corporations and governments which seek to control everything.
Like the Internet, blockchain technology is a tool that can be used for many purposes and I believe empowering people is the highest expression of this new technology. To me blockchain seems like a natural progression, a part of our evolution that has the potential to bring freedom and control back to the individual.
What drew you to Horizen?
I did a lot of reading and research when I first learned about Bitcoin. I realized that even though transactions were pseudo-anonymous there were many ways to track the flow and identify the participants and amounts. I was searching to see if anyone had fixed this problem and also wanted to do some mining at home. I discovered Zcash and Zclassic which quickly led me to Zencash, each seemed to be an improvement of the other.
I mined Zencash as a hobby and when I dug a little deeper discovered the inspirational team behind it. The team has made some very savvy decisions such as starting the Securenode project as an alternative when the transition to ASIC mining took it out of reach of the home hobbyist. They continue to bring out innovations such as the new sidechain model which is unique to the industry. I’m now a great believer in this project which is growing and has so many fantastic people working to support it.
Is there anything about yourself you’d like to share with the Horizen Community?
I live in a cold northern climate and went out snowshoeing the other day. The trees were covered in snow and the bright sun made everything glitter. For a while, I just stopped and looked around me and enjoyed the beauty of the world. It’s very easy for me to become obsessed with checking my Twitter feed or watching the crypto markets and easy to become distracted playing video games. I hope everyone can take a few moments out of their day to look around them and reconnect with the present. We are lucky to live in such exciting and perilous times with so many opportunities to grow. I’m thankful for the positive community at Horizen.
THANK YOU FOR THE SUPPORT, MARKL! WE ARE GLAD YOU CHOSE TO JOIN OUR COMMUNITY.
